Ann L. Smith, 89, of Stoneham died November 4, 2014, following a short illness. She was the beloved wife of the late Ralph T. Smith. Born in Boston; she was the daughter of the late Mortimer and Nora Claire (Callahan) Liston.
Ann was raised in Melrose and graduated from Melrose High School in the class of 1942. She was the goalie for the undefeated MHS field hockey team allowing only one goal.
Ann and her husband Ralph moved to their West St., Stoneham home in 1957; they lived there throughout their marriage and just recently Ann reluctantly decided it was time to give up living in the big house. Ann loved her home and all the happy memories it held for her.
Being an athlete herself in her youth, Ann was an avid sports fan; loyal to all the Boston Teams. She was a voracious reader, enjoying four to five books a week. She enjoyed politics, was a loyal Democrat and often worked the voting polls at the Stoneham Town Hall.
She leaves her six sons, Ralph T. Smith, Jr. & his wife Moira of The Woodlands, TX, Edward Smith & his wife Karen of Medford, Stephen Smith & his wife Cathy of Woburn, Kevin Smith and his wife Mona of Woburn, Brian Smith of San Diego and Dennis Smith & his wife Stephani of South Grafton and two daughters, Anne Palmariello & her husband Joseph of Sanbornville, NH and Patricia Chines & her husband Fran of Amesbury. She is also survived by twelve grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Funeral from the Anderson-Bryant Funeral Home, 4 Common St., Stoneham, Monday at 9 A.M. followed by a funeral mass at 10 A.M. in St. Patrick Church, 71 Central St., Stoneham and burial in Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford. Visitation will be at Anderson-Bryant Funeral Home Sunday, 1-4 P.M. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Stoneham Public Library, 431 Main St., Stoneham, MA 02180
