(Flag) Norman W. Blake, 74, of Stoneham, died peacefully in his sleep on December 14, 2015, at Mass. General Hospital. Born and raised in Keene NH, he was the son of the late Norman A. and Grace (Wall) Blake.
He attended Lincoln Elementary, Franklin Junior High and graduated from Keene High School in 1959. He loved sports and participated on the
baseball and football teams at Keene High.
Norman enlisted in the United States Navy in 1960, and served in Vietnam on the Aircraft Carrier USS Constellation and the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt. After being released from active duty, he was transferred to the US Naval Reserves until January 1966, where he honorably fulfilled his obligations.
He lived most of his life in the Boston and Stoneham Area. Near the time of his death, he was forced to retire because of health issues. He had previously been employed by the Veterans Affair Facility, the Melrose Wakefield Hospital and Stoneham Stop & Shop.
Norman loved sports of all kinds. He especially enjoyed watching the Boston Red Sox, the Patriots and the Bruins. Most recently he filled his days watching favorite television shows, sports events, visiting with friends and reading books on tape for the blind.
He is survived by his daughter, Lori Blake Stevenson & her husband Rob and three grandchildren, Bobby, Mat and Jillian Stevenson all from the Norwich, CT area. He was the brother of Dorothy Blake Byrnes & her husband John, Sr. from Keene, NH; the uncle of Sheryl Byrnes Beckta, Michael Byrnes, John Byrnes, Jr. & his wife Kiersten, Timothy Byrnes & his wife Jennifer and grand uncle of Ryan, Jessica, Jed, Josh, Jess, Jason, Julie, Adam, Madeline, Jamie, Chien, Colin, Allison, Emily and Ian. He also leaves behind several cousins and many friends, including special friend and caregiver, Judy Johnston and her family.
Burial will be in the spring at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Keene, NH, with military honors. Graveside prayers will be offered by a Deacon from the Parish of the Holy Spirit. Date and time to be announced.
The family has requested that those who wish to remember Norman, may offer prayers in their own way or through Mass cards at the Catholic Church of choice-St. Patrick’s in Stoneham, St. Bernard’s Church or St. Margaret Mary in Keene, NH.
