Yvette Marcelle Loup

June 30, 1922 — March 22, 2016

Yvette Marcelle Loup died peacefully March 22 after
a fall in her home in Lexington, Massachusetts on February 29.
She was 93.
Yvette was born on June 30, 1922 in Yverdon-les-Bains, Switzerland to her parents, Marthe and Auguste Höhn, the second of five children. She graduated from
L’ Ecole Professionelle d’Yverdon-les-Bains as a master tailor.
In 1945 Yvette (Höhn) married
Georges Loup and their daughter Christiane was born in 1946. Georges was a soccer player and Yvette had a small business as a tailor. They had many friends, an active social life, and were generally the last to leave a party.

In 1960 they emigrated to the United States with the promise of a better life. After a short stay in New York City, the family settled in Cumberland, Rhode Island.
Yvette was a gifted craftsman, tailor, knitter, embroiderer, cook and gardener. Delighted to share her knowledge of sewing she taught classes for over 20 years and gave dozens of students the confidence to be independent and creative with sewing and knitting projects.
In Georges’ and Yvette’s garden, vegetables, berries and flowers blossomed as long as the New England weather allowed. In the fall, Yvette carried as many of her beautiful plants as she could fit in her house and in a small greenhouse. Yvette and Georges enjoyed welcoming neighbors, friends and travellers to their home. Someone was always visiting. The house was welcoming and open to conversation, debate and celebrations.
In the mid 1980’s Yvette and Georges lived for several years as ex-pats in Algeria. They were curious and adventurous; made more friends, travelled extensively and visited deep into the Sahara desert in a small Peugeot 404. When Georges retired, Georges’ spirit of adventure and Yvette’s love of life on cruise ships took them around the world – a culmination of their lifelong curiosity and love of travel. Yvette is buried with her passport – just in case.
Yvette never forgot the hardships of living in wartime and those memories shaped her embrace of life. She loved her house in Cumberland, Rhode Island. She loved her family, especially her grandchildren, Valentina, Noah and William. She loved the birds in her garden. She loved a good table, champagne, lobster, and chocolate. She loved welcoming all on holidays. She loved to travel. She was always engaged in a project; she was always doing, being, creating. She loved life.
Yvette will be buried in a private ceremony on March 28 in Lexington, Massachusetts. A memorial and celebration of her life will be held at a later time.
