Florence C. Newman

Florence C. Newman of Carlisle, MA died on June 30, 2016, after a prolonged battle with cancer. She passed in the comfort of her own home with her family beside her, at the age of 81.
Born in Elizabeth, New Jersey in 1934, she was the daughter of Herald and Florence Reigner (Long) of Roselle, New Jersey. She attended Roselle Schools, St. Luke’s Episcopal Church and was a member of the Rainbow Girls. After graduating from Abraham Clark High School in 1952, she began working for the Prudential Insurance Company. During this time, she started what was to become for her and her family, a 76 year tradition that is carried on today; spending as much of the summer as possible at a remote family cabin on her beloved Eagle Crag Lake in New York’s Adirondack Mountains.
In 1954 she married Austin, and arrived for the first time in Massachusetts where the couple lived in Billerica. Years later she found out her first married home was only a short distance from the Carlisle town line. In 1955, they returned to New Jersey. Over the course of the next nine years Florence was to take her expanding family to live in the Netherlands and then to Germany. A job change in 1964 brought the family back to Carlisle which became their primary home for the next 52 years, not including extended stays in New Jersey, as well assignments to the Netherlands and Florida.
While in Carlisle, Florence attended the Carlisle Congregational Church, sang in the choir and participated in the Every Ready and the Ladies Friendship Circle. As an avid painter, Florence honed her artistic skills in the Dutch style of painting called, Hindeloopen and produced “many a work of art” that she sold at church craft fairs or gave as gifts to friends and family. Ever an example to her children, she was a Girl Scout and 4H Leader. Florence retired to Carlisle in 1996 became a member of several book clubs, volunteered for the Carlisle Council on Aging and the American Heart Association.
A loving wife, mother and grandmother, Florence Newman is survived by her husband of 61 years, Austin C. Newman of Carlisle, MA, her (4) daughters and (1) son and their spouses: Susan and Robert Burnock of Seekonk, MA, Kathryn and James Whitney of Hudson, NH., Wendy and Paul Sanderson of Westford, MA, Bonnie Jean and James Kuras of Francestown, NH and Daniel and Heather Newman of Merrimack, NH; her (17) grandchildren and (10) great-grandchildren. A private service will be held for family.
