Shea Smith III, 99 years of age, died peacefully on August 22, 2016 at his residence in Bedford, Massachusetts. He was born in Chicago but lived most of his life in St. Louis and Marblehead, Massachusetts. He married Carol Shepard of West Newton, Massachusetts, in 1947. They had four sons.
He had worked for Monsanto Company for more than 25 years where he held several positions including: Corporate Director of Marketing Research, Assistant to the President and Secretary of the Executive Committee, and International Planning Director. Following his retirement in 1977 from Monsanto, in addition to consulting, he taught policy at the University of Missouri St. Louis, and was editor of Blue Chip Economic Worldscan, an international economic forecasting service. In St. Louis he was a volunteer consultant with SCORE (Service Corps of Retired Executives) and with Executive Service Corps.
He is author of two books: Strategies in Business, published by John Wiley & Sons in 1978, and Nonprofit Strategic Planning, self-published in 1997 and revised and republished in 2015. He was active in many professional organizations including American Chemical Society, American Marketing Association, Japan America Society of St. Louis, Harvard Business School Industrial Economists Group. He earned a chemical engineering degree from the University of Wisconsin and an MBA from the Harvard Business School.
A sports enthusiast, his hobbies included skiing, tennis, sailing, hunting, swimming, and fly-rod fishing.
His wife, Carol, predeceased Shea in 1999. Among Shea’s family members who survive him are: Clark and Jean Smith of Washoe Valley, NV; Steve and Peggy Smith of Parsippany, NJ; Brad and Sally Smith of Groton, MA; and Phil and Winnie Smith of Newburyport, MA. In addition, Shea had 10 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
Shea’s body was cremated and his ashes will be released to the sea off of his beloved sailboat, Heeltapper, by his family in a private ceremony. A memorial service will be held at 3pm on Saturday November 12, 2016 at the Old North Church, 35 Washington Street, Marblehead, MA 01945.
