Peter Gumpert

May 5, 1934 — February 3, 2017

Peter Gumpert, age 82, of Brookline, MA, a well known psychologist, died in the comfort of his home on February 3, 2017. He was the beloved husband of Susan Silveira and the loving father of Laura Gumpert. Also survived by his sister Susan Pelican, brother David Gumpert, nephew Ezra Beeman and nieces Rachel Pelican and Emily Page.
A memorial gathering will be held at United Parish, Willet Hall, 15 Marion Street, corner of Harvard and Marion Streets, Brookline, MA , February 11th at 11 A.M. Interment at Walnut Hills Cemetery, Brookline, followed by a reception at Peter’s home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Facing Cancer Together.
Peter had a calm presence and capacity for deep listening. While he was a man of humility, his wisdom and intellectual capabilities allowed him to master many diverse areas of interest with passion and integrity.
Peter was a pilot in the Air Force. He was a gifted teacher, researcher and writer, and became a beloved mentor to students, peers and colleagues. He was a civil rights activist, and testified before the House un-American Activities Committee. He could fix most any computer problem. He played the viola and banjo, and especially enjoyed old-time Appalachian tunes. He was an amateur photographer.
For the past 36 years, Peter practiced clinical and organizational psychology, and was deeply committed to his patients. He founded the American Mental Health Alliance to uphold the integrity of clinical practice and the fundamental rights of patients in this age of managed care. As president of GLS Consulting, he worked to improve numerous organizations, and was a skilled executive coach. He served as a president of the Northeastern Society for Group Psychotherapy.
His life with Sue and Laura over the past 26 years was his greatest source of joy and contentment. He touched the lives of many and will be certainly missed.
