Corkum, Howard “Howie” of Stoneham, passed away peacefully at home on October 18, 2017 at the age of 92 surrounded by Dorothy, his loving wife of 66 years and his children.
Born in Melrose in 1925, Howie attended Melrose Public Schools and enlisted in the Marine Corps at age 18. He served in WW2 in the Pacific Theater. His military service was always a source of pride to him and an inspiration to his children and grandchildren.
He moved to Stoneham in 1951 and was a faithful member of First Baptist Church. As the shared owner of a family business, he joined his father, brother and sister operating B.N. Corkum Transportation Company. After retiring from the trucking industry, Howie worked for an additional 10 years at the Wakefield Public Library.
Howie will be missed beyond measure for his kind heart, humility, sense of humor and devotion to family and neighbors. With a quiet unassuming manner, he was always the first to lend a hand, tackle any project and generously share his time and talents. Left to cherish his memory is his beloved Dot and their seven children. Marlene (Paul) Fitzpatrick of Austin, TX; David Corkum of Washington DC; Patricia Corkum (Stephen) Hopkins of Beverly; John (Janet) Corkum of Chichester, NH; Kathryn (Michael ) Hamerly of Louisville, CO.; Judith Corkum (Dan) Plaster of Seattle, WA.; Jeffrey (Andrea) Corkum of Swampscott.
Howie also was blessed with fifteen grandchildren and ten great grandchildren all who will miss his presence deeply.
