Anne M. Hartmere, age 90, of Cambridge, died December 2, 2018 at Belmont Manor of complications following hip-replacement surgery. Anne was the daughter of the late Henry T. and Edith (Hansen) Hartmere. She was born in Cambridge, where she lived most of her life, and grew up in West Roxbury, but she also lived in Europe for several years (she spoke fluent German) and in Los Angeles.
A librarian by training, Anne’s first job after college was in the serials division at Widener Library, followed by a stint as an Earth Sciences librarian at MIT. Most of her working years were spent at The Architects Collaborative (TAC) in Cambridge. In the late 1980s, she left TAC to accept a position as an architectural librarian at UCLA, where she remained for about eight years. On retiring from UCLA, she returned to Cambridge and married her longtime friend and neighbor, Sandy Lieberman, who predeceased her in 2006. She and Sandy visited LA annually for many years, and Anne continued to visit after Sandy’s untimely death from renal cancer. After retirement, Anne continued to put her librarian skills to good use as a regular volunteer at the Schlesinger Library on the History of Women. She had a host of cultural interests, which she pursued as an active museum, theatre, and concert-goer and via occasional courses at the Harvard extension school. She was also an avid hiker and, in her younger days, skier. She loved good food and foreign travel, and she and Sandy enjoyed many trips to Europe.
Anne is survived by her niece Jennifer Ramsey, her godson Aaron Kofman, and many friends, who will miss her deeply.
A memorial event is being planned for the Spring. Those desiring may make a memorial tribute to Rosie's Place: http://www.rosiesplace.org/give or The Schlesinger Library: https://www.radcliffe.harvard.edu/ways-to-give .
