Arthur Peter Pinkerton shuffled off this mortal coil on April 4th, 2022. Born in Brooklyn, NY on December 2, 1933 to Walter & Adelaine (nee Wright) Pinkerton, Arthur entered the world as Prohibition was ending - a coincidence not lost on anyone who enjoyed a drink and a story with him over the years.
Having the curiosity of a bear (an animal for which he had a great affinity), Arthur excelled academically and discovered his passion for nuclear physics. He wanted his work to help people and ultimately found his calling in medical physics. He served in oncology departments at various health centers including Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Elliot Hospital, Vassar Brothers Medical Center, Hartford Hospital, and North Mississippi Medical Center. Throughout his career, he contributed to research and development that led to advancements in radiation therapy.
Arthur lived in many places during his life. He enjoyed being part of communities in NH, CT, MS, and ME, but in his heart he was always a New Yorker.
Arthur was a student of the world around him. He enjoyed an adventure - whether it be sampling salmon in Alaska or celebrating May Day with mojitos in Havana. He found a fantastic partner for these wanderings later in life with his wife, Valerie. He embraced the arts and encouraged education - dragging his motley crew of children to movie theaters, stages, concert halls, museums, libraries, art colonies, and anywhere else creativity and human expression has a home. He had a special fondness for the Bard and was a patron of local artists. He loved the natural world and all of its creatures, especially appreciating the surroundings at his cottage in Nova Scotia. He was an advocate for peace – “War is not healthy for children and other living things.”
Arthur is survived by his wife Valerie Angeloro and his horde of children: September Flanagan, Christine Witham, Michael Pinkerton, Gwynith (Chris) Frueauf, and Elsa Pinkerton. He also leaves behind his stepson Seth Angeloro, grandchildren Jessica Jordan and Matthew Flanagan, and more family and friends than one can count. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his first wife, Mimi Pinkerton.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Arthur’s memory may be made to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center ( Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (mskcc.org) ), where Arthur started his career, and CHANS ( Giving | CHANS Home Health & Hospice ),which provided services to him with kindness and caring at the end of his life.
To celebrate Arthur’s life please enjoy a good meal, a good drink, and some good conversation. He was truly loved by many and was an A+ Bear.
