John David Mcclain

d. January 23, 2021

McClain, John “David” of Lexington, formerly of Arlington, January 23, 2021. Beloved husband of the late Kay (Ferguson) McClain. Survived by son, John W. F. McClain and his wife Jennifer (Schwartz) of Bedford. Brother of Kathleen (McClain) Kelley of Ann Arbor, Michigan. David is also survived by two grandchildren, Sabrina and Natalie.

Born in Vineland, New Jersey October 23, 1944, David moved to Cambridge to attend MIT. During that time, he met the love of his life, marrying her in 1969. David spent his entire career at Draper Laboratory where he was remembered as a warm and funny colleague and mentor. In retirement, he enjoyed travelling with his late wife, engaging in classes and discussion groups at his home at Brookhaven in Lexington, and a lasting connection to both his primary spiritual home, Arlington Street Church in Boston, and his secondary one, First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church in Bedford. During the pandemic, he would regularly attend both church services on Sundays via Zoom.

David felt very strongly about the inherent dignity and worth of all people. From the nurses who cared for him, to the person who collected the trash, David showed us how to acknowledge everyone. He was a long time supporter of Planned Parenthood, believing strongly that women deserved bodily autonomy and equal rights in our society.

His big grin and constant kindness will be dearly missed.

Due to limitations on gathering, there will be no visiting hours. A virtual memorial service is planned for February 6th. Donations in his memory may be made to Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts. https://bit.ly/2KYO2s7 or to Days for Girls https://donate.daysforgirls.org/give/136291/#!/donation/checkout
