John Gregory Merrick, Jr “Greg”, 85, passed away peacefully at Levine Dickson Hospice House in Huntersville, NC on June 14, 2021 after a two-year illness.
Greg was born on September 14,1935, in Boston, Massachusetts. He was the first of seven children of John and Evelyn (Fitzpatrick) Merrick and grew up in Enfield, CT. Greg proudly attended Canterbury School in CT before his college years at the University of Connecticut where he earned a bachelor’s degree in English with a minor in Art History.
Greg spent ten years as an IBM salesman and spent his last fifteen working years as an outstanding NYC tour guide. His knowledge of the five boroughs of NYC was nothing short of amazing. Greg was a marathon runner in his forties and fifties and ran both Boston and NYC events several times. He loved to travel, especially by cruise ship and saw much of the world throughout his life. His favorite places in the world were Rome and Block Island.
Greg is survived by his three children, John Gregory Merrick, III and his wife, LeAnne Caton of Charlotte, NC, Megan Sullivan and her husband, Paul Egan of McKinney, TX and Julie Meserve and her husband, Ken of Haverhill, MA; his grandchildren, Jillian and Allison Meserve and Leo and Maeve Merrick; his brother, Frank Merrick and his wife, Sally, of Friendship, ME, his sister Lynn Esmay and her husband, Peter of Nyack, NY, his sister Betsy Pyne and her husband, Charles of Norfolk, MA, his sister Sara Mendinhall of Palm City, FL and his ex-wife and friend, Ann Merrick of Bradenton, FL. He was pre-deceased by his brothers Richard Merrick and Peter Merrick.
Greg had immense love for his large family and visited anyone and everyone as often as he could. He will be greatly missed.
A funeral mass will be held at St. Theresa-Avila Catholic Church, 2078 Centre St, West Roxbury, MA, Monday, June 21st at 10:00 A.M. Burial immediately following at St. Joseph Cemetery in West Roxbury. Memorial donations may be made in Greg’s name to the Dementia Society of America, www.dementiasociety.org.
