LTC John Anthony Sulik of Stoneham died peacefully March 27, 2022 at the West Palm Beach, FL VA Hospice Facility. He was 90 years old. Born in New Britain, CT and raised in Norwich, CT, he was the son of the late John and Alice (Murzyn) Sulik.
After graduating from Norwich Free Academy, he received a principal appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point and entered with the class of 1954. Upon graduation, he was commissioned in the Army Corps of Engineers. Among his military service assignments, he saw duty in Japan, Iran, Germany, South Vietnam and Korea where he commanded the 11th Combat Engineer Battalion. In the United States, he taught ROTC at the City University of New York for three years. His military decorations include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Bronze Star, four Army Commendation Medals and the Ranger Tab. He was a graduate of the Command and General Staff College and received a Master of Science in Civil Engineering degree from Iowa State University.
Upon retiring from military service, John became Director of Public Works in Hartford, CT. Four years later, he was appointed to the position of City Manager. After a short time, he returned to his real vocation, managing public works departments in a municipal setting. Over the next 21 years, he managed public works in Billerica and Newton, MA and Stamford, CT, finishing with 17 years in Sharon, MA. While in Sharon, he gained national attention for his innovative use of calcium chloride in combating winter road ice and again, having been frustrated by vandalism to street signs, he began selling them to the public-the vandalism ended.
During retirement, John continued to serve the Town of Sharon as a member of the Water Management Committee. He was president of the Oceancliff I & II timeshare association in Newport, RI. He enjoyed golf and visits to the Connecticut casinos.
He is survived by his wife of sixteen years, Dorothy (Dutra) Sulik; three daughters with his first wife, the late Priscilla (Boston) Sulik: JoAnne Sulik and Lisa Adams both of Glastonbury, CT and Wendy MacDonald of Dayville, CT; five grandchildren and his brother, Thomas Sulik and his family of Jewett City, CT.
