Marie E. (Caligiuri) Burke, age 103, passed away peacefully on August 28, 2023, joining her beloved husband of 71 years, John, who passed away in July.
Marie is survived by her son Brian and his wife Linda of Melrose, and her loving grandchildren, Kathryn of Melrose, and Michael and his wife Chanelle of South Carolina. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Marie is predeceased by her husband John, her mother Mary, sister Sadie and brother Robert.
Marie spent much of her life in Malden and Stoneham. After retiring and traveling the world with her husband John, Marie was happy to stay close to home, hosting weekly dinners with her grandchildren and holiday celebrations with family. She was also an active member of her church community, from chaperoning Youth Group trips to Sunday coffee hours and church dinners. Even at the young age of 95, she would bake cookies for the “old people” at church, never wanting to admit that she was one of them.
Marie will be remembered for her love of chocolate, which she passed on to her grandchildren, her famous Rum Cake and tomato “gravy”. She always loved to cook, and would host many parties for her family and friends. Marie was a very creative person making her own clothing, painting ceramics, and eventually making Halloween ghosts and Christmas angels, which she would sell at several local craft fairs with a close friend. Marie always had endless energy, one could hardly keep up the pace with her when she shopped for bargains at Jordan’s and Filene’s.
A memorial gathering will be held at Anderson-Bryant on Thursday September 28th from 4-7PM.
Burial will be private
