Mary Jo Caggiano

d. July 20, 2023

Mary Jo (Theriault) Caggiano, or as her family knows her, Nana, departed her loving
family on July 20, 2023. Mary Jo grew up on Plum Island in Newbury, MA, that
gave her an unending love for the beach and is also where she met her husband of 56
years, Benjamin A. Caggiano (recently deceased). They lived together in Stoneham
for over 50 years, never forgetting to stop by Plum Island and feel the salt air (which
to her was the best medicine).
Mary Jo received both a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Education from Boston
University, specializing in aphasia work. Her career started at the Horace Mann
School for the Deaf in Roxbury, MA where she worked with hearing impaired and
aphasic students, then dedicated herself as a stay-at-home mom for her two
daughters. In 1980, she began working again in the Stoneham Public Schools,
teaching speech and language to hearing impaired students, and later working with
students in need of additional support. She touched the lives of many and was well
known for taking the time to work with students, ensuring their ability to succeed,
despite their challenges.
In her retirement, she spent time caring for her grandchildren and husband,
working in her garden and enjoying the beach at Plum Island. She loved to share
stories and make people laugh, her sharp wit will be treasured forever in our
memories.
She is survived by her two daughters, Mary Hatton of North Reading, MA and
Helen Fawcett of Nahant, MA as well as her four grandchildren, Benjamin Fawcett
of Durham, NC, Emma Fawcett of Portland, OR, and Sarah and Erin Hatton of
North Reading, MA.
To offer condolences, the family will be receiving visitors on Tuesday, July 25th at 6
Rose Lane, Stoneham, MA from 6 to 8 PM. A graveside service will be held
Wednesday, July 26th at 9:30AM at Linwood Cemetery in Haverhill, MA. The
family requests that in lieu of flowers, please donate to the Lung Cancer Research
