Maurice Albert Walter, 103, of Brooksby Village, Peabody, MA, passed away on April 8, 2022.
Maurice was born in New York City to William and Helene (Majzner) Walter on October 22, 1918. He attended high school at DeWitt Clinton and graduated in 1937. He went on to earn a BS in Mechanical Engineering from City College of New York, graduating in the spring of 1941. After college, he joined Curtis-Wright Aviation Corp, which started a 30-year career in the defense industry, working for companies like Glenn L. Martin, Lockheed, Boeing, and Avco. His career in aviation led to various assignments across the country in Ohio, New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, California, Kansas and finally, Massachusetts. Maurice left the industry when he and his wife, Jean, bought into the Sir Speedy Printing franchise where he did business analysis and sales. He retired at 71 and is remembered for his no-nonsense, straight-talking approach to sales and adherence to high quality standards.
Maurice and Jean had a love for traveling and have explored across the United States and Canada, as well as throughout Europe and Asia. Even when traveling became a challenge, he was always on the go, which gave him the family nickname of “The Energizer Bunny”. With a packed schedule tucked into his pocket, he was always off to do something fun. Until he was nearly 100 years old, most mornings started with a swim. He then used the rest of his free time to meet with various organizations such as Know Your Government and the Men’s Club at Brooksby. He and Jean were also long-standing members of the Heisey Collectors of America. He also enjoyed seeing concerts at Tanglewood, visiting museums, or even a simple trip to get ice cream. His consistent state of being busy allowed his mind and body to stay in sync, and he lived independently until nearly 101 years old.
As busy as his schedule was, he always made sure to be home on Sunday afternoon to host family dinner. His children and grandchildren came from around the state to eat takeout and play games together. At 101 years old, he was still beating everyone at Uno! He always made sure to have plenty of Coca-Cola on hand, and a jigsaw puzzle on the table, even though he never put a single piece in himself.
Maurice is preceded in death by his wife, Jean (Langdon) Walter. He is survived by his children, Karen, Raymond, David, daughter-in-law Heidi and son-in-law Greg, his grandchildren, Daniel and wife Joni, Matthew, David and fiancée Erin, Heather and Ashley, and his great-granddaughter, Zoë.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Brooksby Village Resident Care Fund, 200 Brooksby Village Dr, Peabody, MA 01960.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the staff at Brooksby Village and Lahey Clinic in Peabody.
