Richard A. Winn

September 27, 1934 — December 3, 2018

Richard A. Winn, age 84, of Reading, formerly a long time resident of Stoneham passed away, embraced by his family, December 3, 2018.  He was the beloved husband of the late Kathleen (Flynn) Winn with whom he had shared 47 years of marriage.

Born and raised in Somerville, the youngest of six children; he was the son of the late Thomas and Margaret (Reardon) Winn.

After high school, Richard joined the Merchant Marines and spent twelve years travelling the world. For years he served in the Marine Reserves. Upon settling down in Stoneham, he then was employed as a rigger at the Navy Yard in Charlestown, and later at Hanscom Air Force Base.

Richard was “a diamond in the rough”.  He attended Mass every Sunday at St. Patrick Parrish.  Although he didn’t have an official title at St. Pat’s: he was always there to fill in as an usher, greeter, driver or deliverer, wherever needed. He was opinionated and could be grumpy, but he had a heart of gold, as he was a very supportive and caring husband, father and grandfather.  He was the dedicated caregiver to his wife Kathleen when she was failing in health. He was the best grandfather ever, as he helped raise his grandson upon the death of his dad.  He developed such a bond with his grandson; they were a team.  And teams, they watched on TV, generations of baseball games from every country the game is played. They would discuss the scores and plays as though the games occurred today. Richard truly loved baseball and enthusiastically loved watching Nolen perform at all his games.

He was the devoted father of Laura Jordan and her late husband Jack and cherished grandfather of Nolan Jordan of Reading.

A Memorial Mass will be held Saturday, December 15 th at 10 A.M. at St. Patrick Church, 71 Central St., Stoneham.  In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to The Shriner’s Hospital for Children-Boston, Development Office, 51 Blossom St., Boston, MA 02114 or the Sawtelle Family Hospice House, 320 Haverhill St., Reading, MA 01867.  Arrangements under the direction of Anderson-Bryant Funeral Home, Stoneham.
