Robert “Bob” Raymond, 84, loving husband of the late Margaret (Desmond) Raymond, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 4, 2021, at his home in Lasell Village, Auburndale, following a lengthy illness.
Bob is survived by his in-laws Jean Desmond of Salem, John and Bridget Desmond of Lynn, Robert and Shirley Desmond of NH, Patricia Desmond of Peabody, and Barbara Binkelman of FL, as well as his partner Penny Peoples of Auburndale. He was predeceased by in-laws Mary, Francis, and Paul Desmond, all of Everett. “Uncle Bob” also leaves many nieces and nephews who regarded him as a great friend and mentor, as well as lifelong friends Larry and Dotty Clawson of Dover and John and Ellen O’Connor of Newton.
Bob was born in Caribou, ME to Charles “Chick” and Cordelia (Smith) Raymond. Chick was a farmer, airport manager, pilot, and entrepreneur with a keen interest in technology. His mother passed away when Bob was just a boy. Chick later married Kathryn (Coffin) Raymond, a keen business woman and artist. They each had a significant impact on Bob’s life. After graduating from Caribou High School and Hebron Academy, Bob studied Mechanical Engineering at MIT, earning a BS in 1959 and an MS in 1961. While at MIT, he met Margaret Desmond, whom he married on December 29, 1962.
Following a period of service with the Army Corps of Engineers in Rock Island, IL, for which he was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, Bob and Margaret returned to the Northeast in 1968. They eventually settled in Watertown where they lived happily for the remainder of their 47 years of marriage. Bob worked as a senior design engineer at Thermo Electron in Waltham and registered two US Patents with his colleague, the late Tn Chen. Bob was an amateur pianist, birdwatcher, naturalist, historian and gardener, and delighted in sharing his wide range of interests with friends and family. After retirement, he contributed engineering research to the Aircraft Engine Historical Society and volunteered his time teaching English as a second language at the Watertown Free Public Library.
