Virginia (Heitz) Olson, “Ginny” of Moody ME, formerly of Stoneham, MA, passed away peacefully in York, ME on Sunday, July 18, 2021, after a brief illness.
Ginny was born in Medford, MA, on July 12, 1936; she was the cherished daughter of the late Henry and Susan (McElhenny) Heitz. Ginny was raised and educated in Winchester, MA and was a graduate of Winchester High School class of 1953.
After school, Ginny worked briefly in Boston before taking a position at the Cooperative Bank in Winchester. It was while working in Winchester, that Ginny met the love of her life, John O. Olson.
Ginny and John settled down in Stoneham, MA to raise their 4 sons—John Jr., Jeffrey, Todd, and Douglas. She was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and she was happiest being with her family.
In addition to working at the bank, Ginny also did the bookkeeping for her husband’s Sunoco gas station in Winchester. Later in her career, Ginny worked at the Wakefield Savings Bank before finally retiring from the Northeast Metropolitan Regional Vocational High School in Wakefield where she was a school secretary.
Ginny loved the ocean; she and her family spent many summers vacationing in Wells Beach, Maine fishing, digging for clams, and soaking up the sun. Ginny and John eventually retired to Moody Beach, Maine where they enjoyed sitting on their front porch, watching the birds, and socializing with their Moody Beach neighbors. Ginny enjoyed her weekends with her late friend Hazel Paiva, going to plays at the Ogunquit Playhouse and dining at Stutesy’s Pub & Grill and Mike’s Clam Shack.
Ginny and John also loved their annual trips to Aruba, and their winters in West Palm Beach, Florida.
A woman of great faith, Ginny was an active member of St. Patrick Parish in Stoneham, MA, and most recently, a devoted member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Wells, ME.
Ginny is survived by her beloved husband of 63 years, John O. Olson. She was the devoted mother of John O. Olson Jr. of Burlington, VT; Jeffrey H. Olson and his partner Elise Ouellette of Riverside, RI; Todd J. Olson of Daytona Beach, FL; and Douglas C. Olson and his wife Julie of Wilmington, MA. Loving “Nanna” of Caitlyn Boyle of New London, NH; Nicholas L. Olson and his fiancée Jessica Palmer of Cornish, NH; Jennifer L. Platt and her spouse Victoria of Lincoln, RI; Jeffrey J. Olson and his spouse Cara of Melrose, MA; Jonathan J. Olson and his fiancée Andrea Myers of Coventry, RI; Elisabeth C. and Kristen L. Olson of Wilmington, MA; and Tyler Olson of Lecanto, FL. Sweet “Great-Nanna” to Sophie Boyle of New London, NH; Josephine R. Olson of Melrose, MA and Lennon H. Platt of Lincoln, RI. Ginny was the dear sister of the late Henry C. Heitz and his wife Eunice of Winchester and the late Robert G. Heitz and his late wife Bertha of Woburn. Ginny is also survived by her many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Family and friends will gather for Visiting Hours at the Anderson-Bryant Funeral Home, 4 Common St., Stoneham, MA on Thursday, July 22 nd from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. A funeral mass to celebrate Ginny’s life will take place on Friday, July 23 rd at 10:00 a.m. at Saint Patrick Parish, 71 Central Street, Stoneham, MA.
